This film is the second really
good dramatic movie about African Americans that I've seen this
year (the other being "The Brothers"). "Baby
Boy" was written and directed by John Singleton who also did
"Boyz in the Hood", which I thought was a great film.
"Baby Boy" is a character
driven drama and nothing like the action scenes depicted in the
trailer. The theme is about how grown black men won't leave
the protection and security of their mother's home and won't take
much responsibility concerning their children from various
girlfriends. The movie does not make excuses or try to
justify why the men do this.
The acting is superb. Tyrese
is really good in the lead role. He is not a sympathetic
character nor a likeable one. And it's great to see Ving
Rhames in a dramatic role. Cuba Gooding's brother is also in
the movie and is quite good.
It may be a bit too long but
anybody who likes dramatic movies with good characters and good
acting will like this one.
