“Divided We Fall” is a Czech film that was nominated for an
Oscar for best foreign film last year. This movie is so good that I would have voted for it to win
over “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon”.
The basic story is about a Czech husband and wife who
decide to hide in their home, a Jewish guy who has escaped from
a Nazi camp. They
are scared and reluctant to do this, but their kindness
overcomes their fears and thus they elect to hide him in their
cellar. The twist
is that a neighbor friend, who is a Nazi collaborator, keeps
coming over to the house to visit mainly because he has romantic
feelings for the wife. Thus,
it becomes an ordeal to keep the guy hidden from both this guy
and other suspicious neighbors who think they are being too
friendly towards this Nazi supporter.
This
movie is thought provoking, intelligent, heart wrenching, funny,
and harrowing all at the same time. You
get to know the characters and feel for all of them. The Czech résistance characters are not necessarily heroes
and most of the Nazi sympathizers aren't portrayed as super evil
men. The characters
in this film are very real and it's easy to imagine them being
your next-door neighbors. It's
a magnificently made film with some moving, spectacular
cinematography ( reminiscent of the camera work displayed in
“Saving Private Ryan”).
Don't
let the subtitles keep you away from this film.... go see it if
it comes near you.
