Let me start off by saying that I am a big Kevin Costner fan, despite the bad rap he has been given for the past few terrible films he has made, and some of them have been pretty awful.  However, I like to remember the days of "Field of Dreams", "The Untouchables", and "Dances with Wolves".  I like to forget about films like "Waterworld", "The Postman", and "Message in a Bottle".  So, which category does "Dragonfly" fall under?--good Costner or bad Costner?  Well, I think it should be placed in a new category entitled "Undecided Costner".  There was one major thing about the film that I loved, yet one major thing about the film that I hated.

THE GOOD:  Seeing Kevin Costner in a new type of film.  Costner plays Dr. Joe Carrow, a physician who believes his late wife is trying to contact him through the near death experiences of his patients.  Costner is perfect for the role, and it is such a treat watching him play someone other than a baseball player or a ugly, grungy rebel.  Kathy Bates, who is always wonderful despite her Sinead O'Connor haircut, is his neighbor, Mrs. Belmont, and Joe Morton is one of his coworkers.  The entire plot of the film is basically his attempt to find out why his wife is trying to communicate with him.

THE BAD:  God, this was an awful movie.  The script was so weak and the scenes that were suppose to be tense ended up being more commical.  There is a good cast involved, and a veteran director in Tom Shadyac, but this movie falls flat on its ass from the very beginning and has no hope of ever recovering.  This film--plot wise--is one of the worst Costner films yet.

However, as I said before, Costner actually having the guts to change his choice in roles makes this film all the more likeable, and throwing Kathy Bates in the mix was a very smart thing to do, because she and Costner's willingness to change is what keeps me from giving this film a zero pop review.  So, am I saying you should not go see "Dragonfly"?  Yes and no.  Only die hard Kevin Costner fans will appreciate it, and I have a feeling that the majority of everyone else will be extremely disappointed.  This isn't just a film that critics can make fun of, but also a film that can be lambasted by the audience.  So, this isn't terrible, but it isn't good either.  By the time it was over, I had developed a deep rooted loathing for the dragonfly.  You will too.
