"Fat Girl" is the second film which I have seen from French director Catherine Briellat.  The first one I saw was called "Romance" which I was not that impressed with, and which was the first "regular" film that I have seen that included scenes of hard-core sex integrated into the story.  But I thought I'd give "Fat Girl" a chance since I have read some pretty good reviews of it.

This film is about sisterhood and the corresponding sexual awakening, rivalry, jealousy, and support between two teenage sisters.  The older one is beautiful and the younger one is overweight.  The story heats up when the older girl meets a guy while the family is all on vacation and she decides that it is time for her to have her first sexual experience.

"Fat Girl" moves slowly, but not boring, with long unbroken scenes with lots of dialog.  Both lead actresses accomplish superlative jobs.  It is never difficult accepting them as individuals or as siblings.  Their problems and reactions are entirely credible.  It's an unflinching, graphic and engrossing movie but the director totally loses it with an abrupt, sensational, over-the-top ending.  The director did the same thing with her previous film "Romance".  And like in "Romance", the director is not afraid to show graphic sexual images, which are shown not to titillate but is integral to the story.

I liked the film up until the last 5 minutes where I was turned off by the shocking, brutal ending.  I believe that this ending was trying to show how events in life can happen in a split second when you least expect it.. but I would have liked the story to have been wrapped up in a different way.  This is one film that I have to give two ratings to... one before the ending and one including it.
