"The Glass House" is a film about two kids who suddenly lose their parents and unbeknownst to them Terry and Erin Glass are in their parents will to become their guardians.  At first everything is really nice.  The house is located on the coast in Malibu and the Glass' have lots of money.  The two kids are Ruby (Leelee Sobieski) and Rhett (Trevor Morgan) and they discover some strange things going on.  Well, actually, only Ruby does, but Rhett doesn't believe any of it until he sees it with his own eyes.

The film was directed by a guy who had only done TV series.  He's done stuff for "The X-Files", "Law and Order", "ER", and "Judging Amy".  His name is Daniel Sackheim, and if this is a sign of things to come, he's gonna be around as a movie director for a long time.  He didn't show every detail.  For example, when Dr. Erin Glass is shown stealing medicine and another doctor informs her that the head doctor has asked to speak with her, the scene ends with Erin hunched over at her desk instead of her going to the head doctors office.  I liked the way Daniel Sackheim did the movie that way.  He doesn't explain every minute detail to the audience, and this forces the viewer to figure things out by themselves.

The acting in this film is great.  Diane Lane (Erin Glass) and Stellan Scarsgard (Terry Glass) master their characters.  They really get into the subtle evilness of their characters.  Leelee Sobieski and Trevor Morgan also do well, but I think Leelee Sobieski clearly outplays everybody.  She is gonna have one heck of a career in the entertainment industry.  Kudos to Leelee.  This film has a great story and doesn't rely on special effects.  Put this right next to "The Others" as one as the sleeper hits of 2001.  Like "The Others" it's a little slow at times, but again like "The Others" it is done that way on purpose.  No, there aren't any ghosts, but it is creepy in a whole different way.

Recommendation: If you like a good story without the use of special effects, then you should definitely see "The Glass House" as it is a story that really pulls you in.  One of the top 10 films of the year, "The Glass House" should not be missed.

The thing about glass is that you can see through it-- just like this movie's weak plot.  Done-before-gags after gags build upon one another, each less surprising than the one before.  The idea is to build up suspense- is Ruby overreacting to innocent encounters with her guardians. or are the guardians out to get her?  Too bad the preview gave away the answer.
