"Little Miss Sunshine" is the type of film that amazes
me. Mainly it amazes me because it is able to be
extremely funny, while still being extremely sad and
thought provoking. The story is simple, the budget
low, but it was as entertaining as any film I have seen
this year. As I was walking out of the theater I heard
a man say “Wow, I could watch that movie 20 times.” I
don’t think I could do that. In fact I would probably
not want to see it again, but.. hmmm.. well, maybe at
least one more time.
The film is about a very odd family who travels from New
Mexico to California to allow a young girl to take part
in a beauty pageant. The family is very odd. The
grandfather (Alan Arkin) got kicked out of a nursing
home because of bad behavior. The father (Greg Kinnear)
developed a self-help success program, but is struggling
to pay for breakfast. The brother (Paul Dano) has
taken a vow of silence to help him get into the Air
Force Academy. The bother-in-law is a suicidal
college professor. The mom is pretty normal (Abigail
Breslin) and pretty much holds the family together.
The daughter, who wants to be in the beauty pageant is
also perfectly normal, which is the point of the story –
how a person be special while still being ordinary.
