Long story short:
"Slackers" scrapes the bottom of the barrel of corny
teen flicks. Not one appealing character. Flat gags
with no setup. Meandering plot that's all over the map--to
say the least. This is not only a bad movie, it's
incompetent. Jason Schwartzman is a terrific actor, and it's
a shame that he took a long break from film to take on this
obnoxious role. Usually you feel sympathy for the school
geek in these movies--not this time around. The film has an
amazingly low supply of gross-out gags, and the few it has make
crudeness look boring. How can you make a female
masturbation gag fall flat? Come on! I've never been
more bored with a movie in a long, long time! The real
slackers are the writers, directors and producers of this
lamer-than-lame teen "comedy."

I had extremely high
hopes for this picture. "Rushmore" is one of my top ten
films of all time, thanks largely to the very talented Jason Schwartzman.
I was also hoping that he took such a long break from film to choose
another hilarious, yet challenging role. Boy, was I wrong.
He's still a great actor, but he's batting ..500 now. And, c'mon,
Devon Sawa is a decent actor. I loved "Final
Destination" and "Idle Hands" was cute. Michael
Maronna even pops up, one of his first post "Pete & Pete"
ventures. There was a great cast of young actors, combined with
one of the worst and most recycled Hollywood scripts ever and some of
the most distasteful humor ever. Films like "There's
Something About Mary" and "Kingpin" were funny, but
"Slackers" takes it to a new and more disgusting level, on the
lines of "Road Trip" and "Tomcats". Could this
be the worst film of the year? Yes--in a "Kung
Pow" free world. But, thus far, "Slackers" is
the second worst movie of the year and I can guarantee it will be on the
top ten list. The only reason for seeing this film
is...well...give me a few minutes.
