"Summer Catch" stars Freddie Prinze Jr., Jessica
Biel,
and Matthew Lillard. This movie takes place in the small
town of Cape Cod, where the summer baseball league is it's claim
to fame. The best of the best are invited there to play from
all over the country in order to be recruited for the major
leagues. The local boy, played by Prinze, is one of the
best, but has had a rough life and has quite a few hurdles to
overcome throughout the movie to make his dreams come true.
Some of which are falling for the rich girl in town for the
summer, played by Biel, which no one, especially her father, seems
to approve of, and dealing with the failure and angry temperament
that seems to run in his family.
This
movie had the potential to be something I would really enjoy but
fell short in practically every area. The plot was
predictable and the movie itself seemed to move really slow.
Prinze is a good actor but didn't seem to go anywhere with this
role. Biel could use some work herself. Her character
was extremely annoying and actually seemed quite desperate for a
girl as pretty as she is. The only thing that seemed to
stand out in this film was the supporting cast which included
Matthew Lillard. He played his role well and I think was the
only thing that kept me entertained.
Overall I wasn't impressed with this movie. I think there
was so much more that could have been done with it, including some
more baseball action, less cheesy dialogue, and better
acting. These "overcoming the odds" type movies
are usually my favorite, but if you are looking for something that
will have you leaving the theater feeling good, see "The
Princess Diaries"!
