"The Endurance" is an amazing documentary about an explorer named Ernest Shackleton who attempted to be the first to cross the continent of Antarctica on foot.  This is the most harrowing true story of survival that I have ever seen. The ship that is carrying the 28 men gets trapped in ice on the very first day of the journey which begins in 1914.... and the film documents the next two years as the men attempt to survive and get back to civilization.

Also amazing is that there was a photographer named Hurley on this journey whose haunting photos and film footage is used extensively in the film.  To have both still and motion pictures of the journey survive, in addition to written logs, is simply marvelous.   Eventually, Shackleton sees his ship get swallowed up by the incredible icebergs which photographer Hurley caught on film.  Fortunately, the crew managed to save a couple of lifeboats.

This film is made similar in style to the PBS documentaries made by Ken Burns.  While a documentary may not sound that exciting, this film is more suspenseful than most of the Hollywood fiction thrillers that are put out.   I will never complain of cold weather again!   Go see this one...
