Ben Stiller is a funny, funny guy and that is something he makes
evident in each and every new film with which he is involved.
"Zoolander" is no exception, though it is not quite as
good as I had hoped it would be.
Ben
Stiller is Derek Zoolander, a world famous male model who is more
worried about his hair than whether or not his best friends should
be playing in gasoline (one of the funniest parts). Zoolander
is brainwashed by the evil Mugato (Will Farrell) to assassinate the
prime minister of Malaysia in order to stop child labor from being
ended. Matilda, a reporter for Time Magazine (Christine
Taylor) helps Derek in trying to prevent the assassination from
taking place. Also enlisting in the quest is Derek's model
arch-nemesis, Hansel (Owen Wilson). There are cameos abound in
this hilarious farce, including Jon Voight as Derek's coal mining
dad, Vince Vaughn as the coal mining brother, and Jerry Stiller as
Derek's agent. Also seen are Fabio, Natalie Portman, David
Duchovny, Billy Zane (in a hilarious performance) and Andy Dick.
There
are so many funny parts in "Zoolander", but the film
ultimately does not deliver what the trailers lead us to believe it
would. The scene from the trailer, where Derek says, "How
can they be expected to learn if they can't even fit inside the
building", is hilarious and Will Farrell has fun with his role.
The biggest problem I had with "Zoolander" was the
downright stupidity of some of the jokes-- most are well timed
and catchy while others are just plain dumb.
Stiller's acting is getting better and better, but his jokes are
still the same as they were three years ago. The film has some
rather steamy parts involving sex and drug usage, which is
surprising considering the film has a PG-13 rating. You would think they
could have tacked on the R rating for this one because I saw several
kids in the theater who looked kind of awkward during one scene
involving a picture of an orgy. All-in-all, "Zoolander"
delivers a lot of laughs, just not as many as I expected.
Check this one out if not just for the scene with the midgets.

Pappy ( 1 1/2 out of 4 pops )
Ben Stiller directed, produced, wrote and stars in this big screen
version of his Derek Zoolander (male model) character.
Stiller featured Zoolander in two TV short films shown at the
VH-1 fashion awards in 1996, 1997. The last film Stiller directed was the very poorly
reviewed “Cable Guy.” (Actually I liked “Cable Guy.)
The TV “Zoolander” films were mostly improvised, but
the movie seems to be totally scripted.
Because of this formality, a lot of the attempts at humor fall
flat to the point of being painfully embarrassing for the actors.
I can only give this film
one and a half pops. One
half for the interesting concept. One
half for the many cameos (David Duchovny, David Bowie, Andy Dick as the
Masseuse, Fabio, Cuba Gooding Jr., Lenny Kravitz, Winona Ryder, Vince
Vaughn, Jon Voight, and Billy Zane).
One half for the music ( Relax, Call Me, I Started A Joke, He
Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother, Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go). “Zoolander”
is terrible in my opinion, though I admit I heard a great deal of
laughter in the theater , so maybe I am just wack, yo,yo.
Earth to Pappy.
